COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course will orient, teach, and coordinate students who wish to volunteer to do Arts in Medicine practica at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare. The purpose of the course is to allow each student to use his/her particular talents to benefit Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare patients, families, and staff.  Projects will include interactions with patients in music, dance, or the visual arts and/or aesthetic enhancement of the hospital environment. One hour of credit will be given for each 2 hours/week of 
volunteer service throughout the semester. Students may register for as many hours and semesters as desired. 

RATIONALE FOR THE COURSE:

Community service is a maturing, personally fulfilling and important component in a comprehensive university education. College students are avidly seeking service opportunities in their local community. An Arts In Medicine program has been established by FSU at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital with the capacity for complete orientation, training, coordination, and monitoring of volunteers. This course will benefit FSU, its students, the Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare facility and the entire Tallahassee Community. It will also fulfill the mission of Florida State University to 
provide service to "the public." 

REQUIREMENTS:

Orientation: Completing TMH clearance procedures and attending one two-hour session to learn hospital policies and procedures,patient confidentiality, personal liability and responsibility, dress and conduct codes,sign-in and log-in procedure 

Project Selection: Completing individual interviews 

Project Training: Training in hospital/patient issues and AIM programs related to students' specific placement 

Project Monitoring, Development, & Assistance: Monitoring of hospital sign-in and time-log, completing a weekly schedule of volunteer hours of patient interactions, developing personal qualities conducive to serving AIM objectives, providing assistance as needed, and reporting/submitting experiences in weekly logs. 

GRADING/EVALUATION:

Evaluation Criteria: There are no exams. Assignments include a log of hours volunteered, a weekly log of experiences submitted each week, and a final essay of the students' impressions and growth following the experience. Students enrolled for graduate credit  will volunteer the same number of hours, and in addition, will be given a lead role in implementation of a specific project, i.e., serving as peer tutors for other tudents, serving as a coordinator for a group of students doing similar
services,  providing a clinical expertise with their volunteer hours, etc. Their grade will be based on hours volunteered, insight demonstrated in the experiential log, quality of essay, andleadership/clinical capabilities. 

Grade: Letter grade based on number of hours volunteered, submission of weekly logs, insight demonstrated in experiential weekly log, and quality of final essay.
